Whilst it is vital that employers look after their staff and maintain the most optimum working conditions, is it also a requirement for employees to look after their workplace and each other to minimise risk of a health and safety related incident.
Your employees must:
Evaluate any dangers or harms within your working place and take the necessary precautions to stop it.Give you the health and safety information needed in order to complete your job safely and to the best of your ability.Provide you with the appropriate equipment and protective clothing that will be needed and make sure it is looked after.Provide toilet washing facilities and drinking water.Ensure the necessary first aid equipment is provided.Make sure any form of injury is recorded.Ensure there is insurance that cover you in case you injure yourself or get ill from work.What you must do:
Make sure you obey the training and information you have been given.Consider yours and other employees safety at all times.Co-operate with your employee.Make sure you report any damage or change within your workplace.Tell someone if you think you are at risk.To legally protect the safety and welfare of employees a body of laws was brought in, these laws were referred to as the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. This piece of legislation covers occupational health and safety within the UK, the employee's health and safety executive is responsible for enforcing the Act. This regulatory framework operates alongside a civil law system which lets individuals bring a law suit against a person or an organisation if they feel they are responsible for a work related incident or even a fatality. These laws are not only in place to protect individuals but also companies and organisations as a whole.
If a health and safety related incident does occur within the workplace and the matter requires legal attention, then there are lawyers that are specifically trained in health and safety that can deal with the matter, depending on the case there could be a comprise between civil lawyers and criminal lawyers.
