How to Identify DUI Cases, and What to Do About Them?

Road accidents caused by drunk driving are increasing day by day. So much so that 50% of all holiday fatalities caused in driving accidents are alcohol-related. Since it is becoming a major concern, it is every citizen's job to stand up and do something about it. The first step is for each to be cautious and responsible on their part.

The second responsibility as a good citizen is to report any drunk driver that one might come across. Fortunately, they aren't very difficult to spot as most suspicious driving behavior is caused by a drunken person in the driving seat. So, the car tends to imitate the inebriation of the person driving it, making him/her easy to spot. There are many kinds of behavior one needs to look out for. For example, look out for such drivers who are tailgating, which is driving too closely to another vehicle. If you can, get a close look at the driver. If he/she is drunk, there will be some obvious signs such as his/her face being too close to the windshield or being fixated at something. Some of the drunken drivers even openly drink while driving, making it even easier to spot such cases.

Some of the other signs of drunkenness include taking turns with a greater radius, turning abruptly or suddenly, braking erratically, stopping inappropriately, like, at a green light or just stopping without a cause in a traffic lane.

Some drunk drivers drive in a zigzagging pattern on the road, while others drive in the direction opposing the traffic flow, and show delayed responses to traffic signals. Some drunken drivers tend to over-speed, which can be fatal to both the driver and the surrounding pedestrians alike. On the other end of the spectrum, some drunk drivers drive so slowly that they cause a hold-up. All of these are indications of an intoxicated driver and they should not be ignored.

Now the question is, what to do once a drunken driver is identified? Naturally most of us would have the urge to follow him or stop him. Don't! That's not your job and you are neither trained nor qualified to do it. The only thing you should do is ensure your own safety first by staying as far away from that vehicle. Do not try to get too close because the driver may stop abruptly or unexpectedly, do not follow the vehicle, and by all means, do not try to stop the vehicle or act in the position of a law enforcement officer or a medical professional. What you should do, instead, is fasten your seat belt. Next, find a phone, and call the police. First you state that you're calling to report a drunken driver. Then you give the car's exact location, followed by the description of the car including, the model of the car, the color and the license number. Finally you briefly explain the driving behavior, and then you let the police do their job.
